What is Family Math?
Family Math is about helping people like and succeed at mathematics, especially parents and children working together. The books are filled with fun games and activities that can be used at school and at home, targeting specific math concepts and strands, and intended for specific grade levels.
Many schools have Family Math nights as part of their parent education program, inviting the parents to come to school with their children to learn how to play and work together. I've organized several Family Math sessions and we always have a wonderful time! It's a great opportunity to meet informally with your students and their families, while equipping parents with the skills and tools they need to reinforce your math curriculum.
You can also use many of the activities as centers or partner/small group work in your classroom. The games are all child-tested and easy and inexpensive for teachers to create with a minimum of fuss and preparation. Many simply require photocopies of game sheets, and things you already own, like dice, playing cards, student calculators, and basic math manipulatives. If you haven't tried Family Math before, be sure to take a look at what it has to offer to enhance and enrich math instruction for you and your students!
